How to install wall lights

Wall lights are the ideal fittings for supplementary lighting: they provide a field of light that supports the general lighting and shows off the layout of a room. Installing them couldn't be simpler: just follow the steps below.

What tools do you need?

To install wall lights, all you need are a few tools: a drill, screws and wall plugs suited to the size of the wall light, and a junction box.

Safety first

Make sure you switch off the power before you start installing the wall light.

Installing the wall light

First, work out the height at which you will position the wall light: two-thirds of the way up the wall from the floor. Then hold the wall light against the wall and mark the position of the fixing screws with a pencil. Next, use the drill to make holes at the marked points and insert the wall plugs. At this stage you can connect the live and neutral wires to the junction box, without touching the earth wire. All that is left is to screw the wall light into place and fit the bulbs.
