As a general rule, one spotlight every 1 to 1.5 m, around 50 cm from the walls. The exact number depends on the light output of each spotlight.
A fixed spotlight provides even general lighting; an adjustable spotlight lets you direct the light towards a wall, a painting or a worktop.
