How to light a room without a ceiling light
Lighting matters in any room, not only to keep the people using it comfortable once evening falls, but also for the look it creates. To light any living space in your home successfully, just follow one simple rule: install a main (or general) light, a task light and an ambient light. In most cases, the main light is a ceiling light. However, some rooms simply don’t have one, either for lack of space or for technical reasons. That means finding an alternative light source. So what are your options for lighting a room without a ceiling light?
Uplighting
A simple, effective idea for lighting a room without a ceiling light is uplighting. This means directing the light upwards towards the ceiling. Naturally, the colour of the ceiling plays a key role in how well uplighting works. A cool, neutral colour such as white is the most effective. Floor lamps with adjustable shades are the most common choice for this lighting technique. To vary the mood in a living space, go for floor lamps with LED bulbs and a dimmer. Another option is wall spotlights placed in each corner of the room and angled towards the ceiling. This creates a particularly original yet understated play of light that makes up for the missing ceiling light.
Use floor lamps
Highly decorative, a floor lamp brings a modern touch and depth to your interior. Although it is mostly used for task and decorative lighting, a floor lamp is also an excellent alternative to a ceiling light as a room’s main light source. In a living room, bedroom or study, a floor lamp fits in easily and adds originality and elegance to your decor. For the best light, position a floor lamp over a seat (sofa, reading chair, etc.), creating a space that is perfect for relaxing and reading at the same time. For successful general lighting, choose arc floor lamps with large, overhanging shades.
Pendant lights: effective and highly decorative
Alongside ceiling lights and chandeliers, pendant lights are excellent light sources for the general lighting of a room. Available in designs to suit every interior style, pendants give a living space a contemporary, sophisticated touch. Classic, industrial, designer, handmade, geometric or simply a single bulb: you have a huge choice of colours and decorative styles for your pendant. From the bedroom to the kitchen, the study and the living room, pendants are found in almost every room of the home. While electrical cables are usually hidden from view, that is not the case with a pendant. On the contrary, a well-installed and well-arranged pendant cable becomes an extra decorative feature. You can even hang your pendant in the centre of the room, above the dining table or desk, and at the same time create a decorative path with the cable and hooks on the wall and ceiling. This will add originality and flair to your decor, while solving the problem of general lighting in the room.
Track spotlights
Highly fashionable and modern, track spotlights are a very attractive alternative to ceiling lights. Available in a range of sizes, colours, materials (steel, chrome, acrylic, wood, etc.) and designs, it is very easy to find a spotlight to suit your decor. From Scandinavian to neo-retro to industrial, every style has its own track spotlight. To light a room, you can either install track spotlights high up near the walls or centralise the light by fitting the tracks to the middle of the ceiling. For a softer, more elegant atmosphere, you can angle the spotlights towards the ceiling for perfect uplighting. This will add elegance to the room while lighting it perfectly.
Use several wall lights
Another way to light a room without a ceiling light is to use several wall lights. Chic, modern and elegant, wall lights are excellent decorative fittings. Although wall lights are most often used for ambient lighting, they can just as easily serve as the main light when spread evenly around a room. In a bedroom, for example, a wall light can easily replace a bedside lamp while creating a chic, cosy atmosphere worthy of the finest luxury hotels. For the best lighting, choose wall lights with powerful bulbs and a warm colour temperature, with light that imitates the glow of dawn. You will bring a magical, warm and soothing atmosphere into your home. By installing several dimmable wall lights, you will easily light the whole room well while creating different moods. Available in many designs (round, tubular, cube-shaped, conical, various geometric shapes, etc.) and materials (wood, steel, glass, ceramic, acrylic, etc.), you will easily find wall lights to suit your taste in decor.
Don’t overlook decorative lighting
For lighting that is effective, elegant and done properly, add some decorative lights to your room. Once your general lighting and task lights are in place, you can focus on finishing the lighting of your room without a ceiling light. There are several types of decorative light you can install in a room without a ceiling light, depending on its use and size. In a living room, for example, you could choose industrial, rustic or classic table lamps. In a study, on the other hand, industrial-style clip-on lamps are best suited to the studious, intellectual feel of the room. In living spaces such as the bedroom or bathroom, however, lanterns or large candles are ideal for creating cosy, intimate and refined ambient lighting. For task or decorative lighting, you therefore have a very wide choice of decorative fittings, in terms of both materials and designs. If your interior has a rustic style, choose portable lamps in white fabric, rattan or bamboo. These natural materials go perfectly with this style. In a more classic or vintage room, designer or ceramic table lamps will do the job perfectly. Finally, in an industrial or contemporary setting, choose table lamps and portable lamps in glass, ceramic or metal for a look that is both classy and timeless. Among metal lamps, you will find many models in steel, chrome, brass, gold or silver finishes, or bronze.
Coordinate your colours
Good lighting means getting colour rendering, colour temperature and brightness to work together. All three should be taken into account when buying light fittings for a room without a ceiling light. Colour rendering is measured by the Colour Rendering Index, or CRI. Lighting with a good CRI shows off the colours of the furniture and artworks around it, which directly affects visual comfort in a room. Colour temperature, meanwhile, directly helps prevent eye strain while you work in your study or take a reading break. Colour temperature is measured in kelvin. A living space usually needs a warm colour temperature close to that of natural light, around 4,000 K. For rooms where concentration is key, such as a study or library, a cooler colour temperature is recommended, a slightly bluish white of 5,000 K or more. Finally, brightness is measured in lumens. In a living room or study, rooms where mental focus is essential, 300 lumens is recommended. In living spaces used for a wider range of activities, however, 500 lumens is more suitable. As every room has its own lighting needs, these three criteria will guide you towards the perfect light fitting for a room without a ceiling light.
By following these few tips, you will easily achieve harmonious, stylish and pleasant lighting in any room of your home, all without a ceiling light.
