A wall light can complement your main lighting, help you read or highlight a wall. Start with how and where it will be used: soft, diffused light for ambience, a directed beam for reading, or dedicated lighting for a painting.
Check the height, width and above all the depth of the light: in a hallway, a slim projection makes it easier to get past. Next to a bed or armchair, see whether the head can be angled and where the switch is located. Dimensions and adjustment options vary from one model to another.
Compare the lamp base, the number of bulbs and whether the light has an integrated LED. A replaceable bulb gives you more choice; with an integrated LED, check the colour temperature and the manufacturer’s information. Dimming is only possible if the light, the bulb and the dimmer switch are all compatible.
Then choose a finish and material to suit your room. You will find designer wall lights and picture lights in their own dedicated selections.
