A designer ceiling light lights the whole room without reducing headroom. Choose its size, integrated LED or bulbs, and a black, gold or chrome finish.
For the diameter, a simple rule of thumb: (length + width of the room in metres) × 8 gives a rough guide in centimetres. A 4 × 5 m room therefore calls for a ceiling light of about 70 cm. Models range from under 15 cm to over 100 cm for a large living room.
For output, allow 100 to 150 lumens per m² in a living room or bedroom, and 200 to 300 lumens per m² in a kitchen or bathroom. Under a ceiling lower than 2.50 m, a ceiling light is preferable to a pendant, as it keeps the walkway clear. See also our living room ceiling lights and our guide to the right lighting for each room.
Modern style leads the way: discs, rings and geometric shapes in black, gold or chrome metal. Glass softens the light, while acrylic allows very flat shapes. You will also find vintage and retro, Art Deco, industrial, Scandinavian and country-style models, as well as pieces in fabric or crystal, or with wooden accents.
An integrated LED ceiling light is often flatter and has a lifespan of 15,000 to 25,000 hours; a model with bulbs makes it easy to change the colour temperature. Choose 2,700 K for a living room or bedroom. A hallway or kitchen is well lit in 3,000 K warm white. Neutral white, at 4,000 K, is best kept for a study or worktop.
In a bathroom, IP44 is recommended and the position in relation to the shower (the BS 7671 zones) determines the requirements: see our bathroom ceiling lights. For other LED models, see our LED ceiling lights and all our ceiling lights.
Add the length and width, which gives 7 m, then multiply by 8: a diameter of about 55 cm is suitable. A slightly smaller model stays discreet if the bedroom already has bedside lamps; a larger one makes sense if the ceiling light is the only light source.
Yes, if the product page says so: many models are dimmable, but not all. The ceiling light and the wall dimmer must be compatible. For a ceiling light with bulbs, choose dimmable bulbs and an LED-compatible dimmer. If in doubt about compatibility, ask a qualified electrician for advice.
Under a low ceiling, your eyes quickly meet the light source: choose a glass or acrylic diffuser that conceals the LEDs or bulbs. Models that bounce light off the ceiling give softer, indirect lighting. Avoid bare bulbs in a room less than 2.50 m high.
