Living room pendant lights give your lounge its central light and its character. Choose the diameter by floor area and the drop by ceiling height.

Diameter and height: matching the pendant to the room

In a living room, a pendant doesn't light one particular piece of furniture: it spreads light through the whole space. To estimate its diameter, add the room's length and width in metres, then multiply by 8: a 4 × 6 m living room calls for a design of about 80 cm.

  • If people walk underneath: keep at least 2 m, ideally 2.10 m, between the floor and the bottom of the light.
  • Ceiling under 2.50 m: a short pendant or a living room ceiling light saves you ducking your head.
  • Double-height room or mezzanine: designs of 80 to 100 cm and more, or a cluster of 6 lights or more, fill the height without looking lost.

Evening mood, materials and styles

The living room is mostly used in the evening: warm white at 2,700 K and 100 to 150 lumens per m² are enough for general lighting. A dimmable design suits drinks with friends as well as a film night, provided the bulb and dimmer are compatible.

Metal leads, in chrome, brass or black finishes, often paired with glass; crystal adds sparkle to a classic interior. Modern and classic sit alongside vintage, industrial, Art Deco and Scandinavian. LED pendant lights have no bulb to replace. To plan the full scheme, see all our living room lighting, the full range of pendant lights and our guide to lighting your living room.

Frequently asked questions about living room pendant lights

What size pendant for a 20 m² living room?

For a 4 × 5 m room, the (length + width) × 8 rule gives a diameter of about 70 cm. If the same area is narrower, say 3 × 6.5 m, you get closer to 75 cm. Use this as a guide, then adjust for the look: an open frame appears lighter than a solid shade.

Does a pendant work in a living room with a low ceiling?

Yes, provided it stays short. Under a 2.50 m ceiling, you need to keep 2 m clear beneath the pendant, which leaves little drop. A height-adjustable design lets you take the cable up as far as possible; otherwise, a ceiling light keeps all the headroom free.

One or several pendants in a large living room?

In a long living room, two or three pendants spread out give more even light than a single large design. If you line them up, space them 60 to 80 cm apart. Under a very high ceiling, a cluster with globes hanging at different heights fills the space. Always add low lamps near the sofa.
