Hallway pendant lights welcome you at the door without getting in the way. Their drop depends on the ceiling height: often short, sometimes very long, as in a stairwell.

Headroom: working out the drop

People walk beneath the pendant, so the bottom of the light must stay at least 2 m from the floor, ideally 2.10 m. With a 2.50 m ceiling, that leaves 40 cm between the ceiling and the bottom of the light, cable included. Any lower and a hallway ceiling light or a very short pendant is the safer choice.

  • Narrow hallway: diameters from under 15 cm to 25 cm, which don't make the space look narrower.
  • Long hallway: several pendants evenly spaced, or hallway wall lights to carry the light along.
  • Double-height entrance hall: a long or multi-light design fills the void and can be seen from the landing.

Light and finishes for a space you pass through

Warm white at 3,000 K is welcoming without too much contrast with the neighbouring rooms. In the entrance hall, choose a glass diffuser that lights the walls too, rather than a closed cone, which just casts a circle on the floor and leaves the corners in shadow.

Metal and glass dominate, in modern, classic, industrial or vintage styles, with chrome, brass or black finishes. Single-light designs are in the majority, suited to smaller spaces. To light the whole area, see our hallway lighting, our selection of pendant lights and our guide which lights for the entrance hall.

Frequently asked questions about hallway pendant lights

Can I hang a pendant in a hallway with a 2.40 m ceiling?

It's possible but tight: to keep 2 m of headroom, the pendant can only drop 40 cm, or 30 cm if you're aiming for 2.10 m. Only a very short design, almost flush with the ceiling, will do. Otherwise, a ceiling light or wall lights keep all the height free.

How do I light a stairwell with a pendant?

Fix it at the highest point and let it hang down into the stairwell void, out of reach from the stairs and banister. Keep at least 2.10 m of clearance above each step. A large multi-light pendant lights several levels; plan safe access for changing the bulbs.

Is integrated LED a good choice for a hallway?

In a hallway the light is switched on often but briefly: LED is well suited, as it reaches full brightness instantly and lasts 15,000 to 25,000 hours. An integrated version saves changing bulbs at height, while an LED bulb is easy to replace when it eventually wears out.
