A crystal pendant light makes a dining room, living room or hallway sparkle. Its crystal elements throw the light back as reflections, bringing brilliance to dinner and a bright welcome at the door.
Above a table, hang the bottom of the pendant 70 to 80 cm above the tabletop and choose a diameter between half and two thirds of its width; see also our dining room pendant lights. In a central position, (room length + width in metres) × 8 gives a rough diameter in centimetres. In a hallway or living room, keep at least 2 m of headroom under the light, ideally 2.10 m.
Crystal is a dense material, so a pendant dressed with drops is heavy. Check the weight on the product page, plan a fixing suited to the ceiling and follow our advice on hanging a chandelier. Under a low ceiling, a crystal ceiling light gives the same reflections.
Denser than glass, crystal refracts light more strongly: this is what creates the iridescent flashes on the walls and ceiling. Some models combine crystal and glass. The metal frame is usually chrome or silver, or gold and brass; bronze and black give a more contrasting look. Classic style dominates, alongside modern lines, country-inspired designs and Art Deco pieces. A few pendants pair a fabric shade with crystal drops.
The most common models have 6 to 8 lights, and large ones 9 or more. Most take bulbs with a standard cap: choose clear rather than frosted ones to make the facets shine, and dimmable ones if you fit a dimmer. To clean, switch off the power and wipe the drops one by one. For a model with arms, see also our crystal chandeliers and all our pendant lights.
No. Crystal is denser than glass, which lets it refract more light and produce more reflections, but that density does not make it any stronger. Handle the drops with cotton gloves during assembly, store them flat in their packaging and stop them knocking against each other.
A 3,000 K warm white is recommended in a dining room: it flatters food and faces without hardening the reflections in the crystal. Choose clear LED bulbs with a CRI of at least 80, and a compatible dimmer to go from a lively dinner to softer light.
Yes, it is actually a good spot for a large model: the height available allows a long drop, visible from several floors. Keep at least 2 m of headroom under the light, ideally 2.10 m, including from the stairs. Also plan safe access for cleaning, as the drops have to be cleaned by hand.
