Living room ceiling lights brighten the whole room without hanging down. They are the go-to choice for low ceilings, topped up with lamps for reading and atmosphere.

Size and output to suit the living room

Aim for 100 to 150 lumens per m² for general lighting: a 25 m² living room therefore needs 2,500 to 3,750 lumens, from one or more lights. Estimate the diameter with the formula (length + width) × 8: a 5 × 5 m room takes a design of about 80 cm, a size well represented between 60 and 100 cm.

  • L-shaped or very long living room: two smaller ceiling lights stop one corner staying dark.
  • Low ceiling: a ceiling light keeps all the headroom free; above 2.50 m, a living room pendant light becomes an option.
  • Large room: designs with 6 lights or more give broad, generous light, close to that of a chandelier.

Atmosphere, dimming and styles

The living room changes role through the evening: a dimmable ceiling light in warm white at 2,700 K goes from full brightness for cleaning to a discreet glow for watching TV. Integrated LED designs, gathered in our LED ceiling lights, last 15,000 to 25,000 hours; the others take E27 or E14 LED bulbs.

Modern and classic dominate, followed by vintage and Art Deco; crystal adds sparkle to classic living rooms. Metal is combined with glass, acrylic or fabric, in chrome, brass, white or black. Frequently asked questions about living room ceiling lights

Is a ceiling light enough to light a living room?

For general lighting, yes, if it delivers 100 to 150 lumens per m². But a single light from above flattens the room: add a floor lamp by the sofa, a lamp on a low unit and, if possible, wall lights. The ceiling light is then used for cleaning and whenever you need to see clearly.

Should a living room ceiling light be dimmable?

It's advisable, as the same room is used for entertaining, watching films or tidying up. Check three things: the ceiling light must be specified as dimmable, the bulb must be marked dimmable and the wall dimmer must be LED-compatible. Otherwise the light may flicker or buzz.

Which ceiling light for a living room with a 2.40 m ceiling?

A flush or low-profile design that stays well clear of tall people's heads. At this height, a pendant could drop 40 cm at most to keep 2 m of headroom, so a ceiling light is simpler. A wide diffuser spreads light right to the walls and makes the room feel taller.
