Reading lamp or floor lamp: choose for your chair and book

Source position, available space and controls: useful checks for a reading corner.

Published on

A comfortable reading corner lights the book without putting a bright source in your eyes. Start from your usual seated position, not just the height shown in a product photograph.

Locate the reading position

Measure seat height and note where you hold the book. Identify your preferred side and shadows cast by your hands. An offset source may help keep the page clear, but the exact position depends on the chair and your posture.

Compare two positions

A table lamp works when a stable side table is available. A floor lamp frees that surface but needs room for its base. Check the footprint, cable route and access around the chair. A base will not necessarily fit beneath nearby furniture.

Examine the head and shade

An adjustable reading light directs light towards the task. A larger shade may provide softer ambient light. Confirm the adjustment actually specified and whether the source is visible while seated. A curved arm is not necessarily adjustable.

Read the source information

Compare lumens, colour temperature and cap type where supplied. Watts alone cannot compare illumination on the page. With a replaceable source, check bulb size and maximum permitted wattage. With integrated LED, look for servicing information.

Try controls and lighting scenes

An accessible switch avoids getting up. Compatible dimming can help switch from reading to softer ambience, but the lowest setting is not guaranteed to suit reading. Keep extension leads out of routes and add ambient light if the contrast with the rest of the room feels uncomfortable.
