Allow 200 to 300 lumens per m²: for a 10 m² kitchen, aim for 2,000 to 3,000 lumens from the ceiling. Warm white at 3,000 K suits general lighting; save neutral white at 4,000 K for the worktop, which needs 300 to 500 lux. With a CRI of at least 80, meat and vegetables keep their true colours.
Cooking fumes leave a greasy film even far from the cooker hood. Metal, glass and acrylic wipe clean with a sponge; an enclosed diffuser keeps insects and grease off the bulb. Near steam, IP44 designs offer extra protection.
Modern leads, followed by rustic and vintage for country or bistro-style kitchens; white, brass and chrome are the most common finishes. See also our kitchen lighting, all our ceiling lights and our guide kitchen and bathroom lighting.
At 200 to 300 lumens per m², you need 3,000 to 4,500 lumens in total. A single powerful ceiling light can be enough in a square room; in a galley kitchen, spread that output over two lights. Check the lumen value on the product page or bulb packaging, not the wattage.
Yes: LED runs cool, switches on instantly and often lasts 15,000 to 25,000 hours. Its diffuser stays closed, which protects the light source from grease. The trade-off is that the colour temperature is fixed at manufacture, so check it suits your needs: warm white for the room or neutral white near the worktop.
Generally not: the BS 7671 bathroom zones apply to bathrooms, not kitchens. An IP44 design is still worthwhile above a busy sink or in a windowless kitchen where steam lingers. Elsewhere, an enclosed diffuser is enough to keep the bulb clean. If in doubt, ask a qualified electrician.
