Recognising lighting styles: shape, material and proportion

Compare visible details rather than relying on a string of designer, vintage or Scandinavian labels.

Published on

A style name can help a search, but it does not fully describe a lamp. For a coherent room, start with visible features: silhouette, finish, diffuser and proportions.

Describe before applying a label

Exposed metalwork, opal glass and a fabric shade are observable features. Designer does not identify a material or period. Distinguish the actual material from the finish: a wood or brass appearance does not mean the entire fitting is made from it.

Three checks before ordering — Width or diameter — Height and projection — Check fixing and weight
Concept illustration: adapt proportions and placement to the location and model.

CriterionUseful question
SilhouetteIs it slender, substantial, geometric or organic?
SurfaceIs the stated finish matt, glossy, patinated or coloured?
DiffuserIs the source visible, concealed or filtered?
ScaleDoes its volume suit the furniture and available height?

Coordinate without making everything identical

Choose a connecting detail: a shared finish, repeated shape or related colours. Vary silhouettes to distinguish general lighting from occasional lamps. Matching every object is not necessary for coherence.

Use historical references carefully

A Tiffany-style lamp follows a coloured-glass aesthetic; that alone does not make it a historic Tiffany Studios object. Vintage can describe inspiration without establishing age. Check manufacturer information before attributing origin, craft techniques or a period.

Check more than style

Compare dimensions, source type, care and controls. An attractive shade must also suit the light you need. Look at photographs lit and unlit where available, without expecting an exact colour match in your home. Related products let you compare actual forms, not guarantee one style across an entire category.
