Choosing a bathroom ceiling light: size, light and protection

Compare ceiling lights, take useful measurements and check manufacturer information before installation.

Published on

A bathroom ceiling light should illuminate the route through the room and provide general light. It will not necessarily replace mirror lighting. Separate those tasks before looking for one fitting to do everything.

Measure the available space

Record ceiling height, room width and the movement of doors and tall cupboards. Compare overall projection as well as diameter: a wide, shallow fitting occupies space differently from a small, deep one. Check access for changing a bulb or cleaning the diffuser.

Read the lighting information

Watts describe power consumption; lumens describe the stated light output. Light colour and distribution matter too: a visible source can cause glare even when the output appears suitable. Compare the available information and ask for missing specifications before ordering.

Check the IP rating and instructions

A bathroom label and an IP rating do not approve every installation position. The exact fitting, electrical class, instructions and conditions at the location must be considered together. Have a qualified electrician confirm the choice and installation against the requirements applicable in your country.

Prepare a useful shortlist

Keep your measurements, fitting reference, existing mirror lighting and preferred control together. Do not assume an LED fitting is dimmable: the specification must say so and identify a compatible control system. The products below are comparison starting points; read each full specification before deciding.
