With a low ceiling, a few centimetres can change how spacious a room feels. Compare the overall installed height, not just diameter or the presentation photograph.
Map the routes through the room
Measure ceiling height and locate doors, windows, cupboards and everyday routes. A fitting over fixed furniture has different constraints from one above a walkway. Suitable clearance must be checked in the real setting and against the fitting’s instructions.
Compare the families
| Family | Possible benefit | Decisive check |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow ceiling light | Limited projection | Total depth and source access |
| Surface-mounted spot | Directed light | Depth and beam direction |
| Short pendant | Accent above furniture | Actual minimum drop, including canopy |
Check the minimum drop
A short cable is not enough if the fitting body is tall. Combine the manufacturer’s stated dimensions for canopy, minimum suspension and body according to how the specification defines them. If an overall drop is already provided, do not add it twice. Ask for confirmation when the figures are unclear.
Avoid lighting only the floor
A diffuser or complementary sources can soften contrasts on walls. A long room may benefit from several positions instead of one very intense point. This is a layout choice: results depend on lighting specifications and surface finishes.
Plan for maintenance
Check how to open the fitting, change the bulb or service an integrated LED. A shallow fitting is not necessarily recessed: recessing requires installation dimensions and a suitable ceiling structure. Have support and connection checked before ordering if those details are uncertain.
