Choose a wall light by task: atmosphere, reading, mirrors or artwork

Compare light direction, projection and connection instead of choosing by appearance alone.

Published on

Two wall lights of the same size can create very different effects. Before choosing a finish, decide what the light should illuminate and where you will view it from.

Choose a task before a shape

For atmosphere, compare light on the wall and visibility of the source. For reading, look for light directed towards the page and an accessible control. Mirrors and artwork need particular attention to illuminated width and shadows.

Measure the installed fitting

Record height, width and projection, then represent that volume with a lightweight template. Check doors, headboards and passage width. An adjustable arm can project farther in use than at rest; look for the relevant dimensions in the instructions.

Confirm power and controls

A hardwired wall light does not become a plug-in lamp without suitable modification. Check whether cable, plug and switch are actually supplied. A switch does not imply dimming: that depends on the source and intended system. Ask a professional to confirm the connection.

Plan access and care

Make sure you can remove the diffuser and replace the source where replacement is supported. In bathrooms and outdoors, the position must suit the exact model and local rules. Compare each specification instead of treating one mounting height as suitable everywhere.
